Can you believe we still have 4 more weeks until school starts? This summer has been an absolute blast! The kids and I have enjoyed every minute of our time together and we still have more to go! If you’re still counting down the days until your kiddos return to school but recognize it’s entirely too hot to send them outside (we have 100 degree plus days here in August); then the exercises below are perfect for getting your child’s daily recommended amount of physical activity in without having to venture outside in the heat.

I am a smoothie addict. I love everything about them. Here are a few of my favorite 5-ingredient smoothie recipes.

Blueberry Oat Hazelnut
Looking for something a little different in the morning? Try this Blueberry Oat Hazelnut smoothie to get you going. Add some Nutella for an even better taste.
1 cup almond milk
1 cup blueberries
1 tablespoon hazelnuts
1/4 cup rolled oats
Peanut Butter & Jelly Smoothie
This after workout smoothie has been perfect over the last few weeks while I’ve been lifting.
1 cup almond milk
2 tablespoons peanut butter
1/2 cup raspberries
Green Nut Butter Smoothie
Chia seeds contain five times more calcium than milk and seven times more Vitamin C than oranges, three times more iron than spinach, and twice the potassium content of a banana.
With the nutrients contained in just a handful of these seeds, they make a perfect addition to this already yummy smoothie.
1 cup almond milk
2 cups spinach
1 tablespoon chia seeds
2 tablespoons almond butter

Strength training workouts for kids, when done correctly, offers many benefits to young children and adolescents. Like yoga, strength training has become another one of my favorite non-competitive activities for my children to complete.
Strength training can add:
- Increased muscle strength and endurance.
- Sports performance improvement.
- Better cardiorespiratory function.
- Helps to protect the child’s muscles and joints from injury associated with other activities.
- Stronger bones.
Like adults, the importance of developing early healthy habits can not be overemphasized. The most important aspect of any youth fitness and sports program is improved attitude regarding physical fitness. When starting early, strength training workouts for kids can help improve their outlook on youth sports activities and can help improve their own self-confidence when completing physical activities.
It’s the weekend, hopefully, you are spending your time doing something you love and spending time with people you love. For this weekend’s edition of Self-Care Sunday (on Friday) I wanted to share my activities for the week, as it has been super busy!
This week the children are away visiting family, so I decided to have a self-care week instead of just waiting until the weekend. It has been very relaxing over the last few days, I miss my children dearly, but I would be lying if I said I wasn’t enjoying this much needed break.
If you live in a community/city/town with a lake check out your local recreation commission. We are fortunate to have one that rents kayaks/canoes, so for those of us who lack the space, this is a great option. It’s also cheaper as most places are operated by your county/city the rental fees will be a little cheaper compared to specialty rental stores.

Growing up in the South food has always been the center of every get together; whether it’s church, school project (thanks, Dr. Manigault) or family gatherings, you can always count on a dish of baked macaroni and cheese and fried chicken. Having been surrounded by so much food, it’s almost always impossible to turn down a plate. As soon as you walk into the room “Hey fix you a plate”. And if you don’t eat, well, you’ll just be asked a dozen times if you’re sick and why aren’t you eating. Since changing my lifestyle, I have cut back a lot on the ‘soul food’. It hurt more than anything else to give up my favorite foods, for eighteen months I ate all the right foods, counted calories and really began watching what I was putting into my body. During that time I began researching healthy soul food recipes. Thanksgiving was coming up and I refused to continue giving up macaroni.
I know I often speak about my cheat meals, but in this particular instance, I no longer wanted to continue avoiding foods that brought me joy. I started gathering my favorite recipes and modifying them either due to ingredients or calories. They taste is still the same, but much healthier.

Our dog goes everywhere with us! Yes loves the outdoors just as much as we do, so I try to often include him in my workouts as well. It took a minute for me to think of “fun” workouts, because I don’t know if it could be considered fun for the dog necessarily.
Now that it’s summer, I’m careful not too spend too much time outside with him during the heat of the day, so we get a lot of pur exercises done first thing in the mornings.
